I was looking to buy a dromedary bag for a backpacking trip when I came across this canteen bladder and cover. For the price of a 6 liter dromedary bag I was able to buy this 2 quart canteen bladder with cover and sling along with two extra bladders. I find these to be more functional and easy to use than a dromedary bag. In addition to storing water in camp, they can be carried with the sling while hiking or puttering around camp - you can't do that with a dromedary bag. I also like the insurance of splitting the 6 quarts between three containers rather than having it all in one large container. It's less likely that you'll lose all your water in the event of a gear failure. They are thinner than a standard canteen and thus are "crushable" to save space in your pack when partially full or empty. In addition to the sling there are two ALICE clips on the back for attachment to your pack or belt. The cover is insulated with a synthetic wool and can also be wet down to keep the water cool through evaporative cooling. Very functional and of high quality, this is a great piece of gear and I highly recommend it.This comes with a canteen but please read:If your canteen leaks, it is likely due to the mouth area of the canteen not forming a decent seal with the cap. This is because the two sides of the molded canteen are uneven. To fix this, sand the circular flat mouth area flat with 100 grit sandpaper and clean it up with a finer grit. Once the area is flattened, no more leaks. You can test for leaks by just squeezing the canteen and listening for air escape from the cap. I also cleaned up the sharp molded edge leftovers around the entire canteen with an exacto knife. These are likely canteens that didn't make the quality control cut but they are fixable with a little work. The entire canteen, canteen cover, and strap are a decent deal for the price. We had these mil-style or actual surplus canteens and covers in our desert Boy Scout troop. They were great for convenience when worn with a web belt and LC-1 or 2 surplus shoulder harness. We also learned to carry the canteen cup with canteens that fit inside these covers. Instead of an iodine water "purifier" bottle in the small pocket, we fit a couple of dry fuel tablets for our (drum roll) German surplus Esbit folding stoves. Later in both the active and reserve Marine Corps, we were issued these. They attach with the "Alice" clips to the web belt. I prefer these to the Billion dollar MOLLE Boondoggle rip-off scam for "deuce" gear. Too many "necessary" connection pieces. I've purchased the newer plastic "toxin-free" quart canteens (been used in Europe for some time) to replace my old U.S. relics. The quality is good and the price made the sale. With the backpack hydro bladder, desert hands-free hiking is safer with more water.Pretty good 2 qt canteen. The one I got is marked 1995 and is of noticeably higher quality than the ones I've seen at the local army surplus store. It holds plenty of water and being soft sided can be compressed to remove all the air and eliminate sloshing for the most part. The cover is compatible with Alice and Molle gear as well as being useful as a stand alone item. The little outside pocket is big enough for a lighter or some purification tablets. The only negative is a funky plastic smell and sometimes taste. I've washed it a couple of times and it does seem to be fading so hopefully over time it will go away completelyI will give the carrying case a 5 star because it is awesome but it did not come with the 2 quart water canteen so I am going back to the company and see if they will make things right seeing the picture shows a canteen bottle with it.AmmocaMan has better prices than most other sellers in addition to better quality items. I've seen reviews about ppl receiving canteens with splits in the seams of the bladder, bad cap seals, & damaged pouches that paid more for those items than I did. I purchased two of these canteens for backpacking/hiking and have only $22 +change in BOTH of them. Other sellers charge that or more for just ONE. I've paid $$ for lesser quality water containers that didn't last a single season but I will never buy canteens from another source again if I ever need more!! The only glitch I experienced was that one of my canteens didn't have the plastic piece that attaches the cap to the bladder...but I'm not complaining about such a small issue considering the bargain I paid for two canteens in otherwise terrific condition. AmmocaMan's SHIPPING WAS SUPER FAST,too!!!The Canteen works great when I take it on my dog walks. It holds enough water for the dogs, which I pour into a folding dog bowl and myself. I would have given it five stars but I find the strap to be a little short. If it was longer I would give it a five star rating.
